Auditor Candidate Refuses to Retract Anti-Military Sentiment, Joins Liberal Opposition to Immigration Reform
WILDWOOD, MO: In a statement issued June 9th, 2010, Missouri Auditor Candidate Tom Schweich reiterated his belief that the U.S. military should have no role in protecting our borders, referring to border control efforts as “non-military tasks.”
Mr. Schweich also failed to retract his bizarre conspiracy theory accusing the U.S. military of using the issue of border control as part of a conspiracy to overthrow civilian authority. In a December 21, 2008 Op-Ed he penned for The Washington Post, Mr. Schweich argued against a plan to deploy 20,000 U.S. troops to help secure borders declaring, “‘the generals are not only dominating our government activities abroad, at our borders and in Washington, but they also seem to intend to spread out across the heartland of America.” This comes just days after President Barack Obama deployed 1,200 National Guard troops to the Mexican border.
“This is a disturbing position for an alleged conservative to take,” said Steve Walsh, spokesman for the Allen Icet campaign. “Tom Schweich must be the only self-proclaimed Republican in Missouri to actually be to the left of President Obama on border security.”
Schweich’s release also attacked Allen Icet for supporting HB 1549, the sweeping anti-illegal immigration reform measure adopted by the Missouri legislature in 2008. HB 1549 empowered Missouri law enforcement to identify illegal immigrants and established stiff penalties for state contractors that employ illegal aliens.
“Only twelve members of the Missouri House, all extreme liberals, opposed HB 1549,” Walsh pointed out. “Once again, Tom Schweich has joined with the far left in opposing meaningful illegal immigration reform.”
“The choice in this race remains clear,” Walsh concluded. “Allen Icet is the only candidate in this race with a plan to combat illegal immigration in Missouri and a track record to back it up. Tom Schweich continues to prove that he simply does not share the same values as Missouri conservatives.”
